Letter from Darryl Keil,
President of Vacuum Pressing Systems, Inc.:
As a woodworker myself, I have found the great joys of woodworking to be the satisfaction and pride that come from standing back and enjoying an object made with one’s own hands – whether it be a single piece of furniture or and entire architectural installation.
We depend on our tools to manifest our ideas. A good tool heightens our accuracy and efficiency. A great tool helps us expand our level of craftsmanship to new heights, as well as execute projects that would otherwise be too difficult.
In my experience, the VacuPress has been one of these tools. Sometimes woodworking has presented me with a series of problems to solve; the VacuPress has often been part of the solution. But more than that, it has kept my creative juices flowing, which for me is what working with wood is all about. This is why we urge you to ” Imagine the possibilities” when thinking about the projects you can complete with the VacuPress at your disposal.
Our history
As with many successful ideas the VacuPress began as a problem to solve. One day a designer we worked with asked us to build a piece of furniture that required extensive veneering. We didn’t want to sub it out because the job was fairly intricate, but we lacked a veneer press. We were not prepared to give up the shop space a conventional veneer press required or spend a great deal of money on equipment we didn’t expect to use every day.
That was the problem.
The solution came from some creative thinking and remembering a few vacuum experiments from high school physics class . Although I was convinced the idea was flawed somehow, the first vacuum system we put together exceeded all my expectations. The project came out beautifully and veneer soon became a signature part of our business. Not only could the press do flat work. but curves and shapes were almost as easy and allowed us to offer our clients a whole new level of design choices.
After 6 years of use in our own cabinet shop and many requests from other woodworkers to make more machines, Vacuum Pressing Systems, Inc. was born. Little did we know how many other woodworkers were in our position – and how much veneer was regaining popularity.
The rest is history.
Our woodworking background provides us a unique advantage as the manufacturer of vacuum pressing equipment. All our VacuPress products reflect our practical experience in the trade. If you ever have technical or general veneering questions we always welcome your call since good backup is just as important as good equipment.
Using a vacuum press, however, is the easy part. Learning how to veneer – now that’s the hard part. And that is why this web site includes a veneering “Forum”: to allow woodworkers the world around to exchange ideas and help one another advance their veneering skills.
